클로저closer 감상.

영어자막을 구한 보람이 있었다.
극장에서 우리말 번역으로 보았을 때와는 분명 다른 느낌.

이 영화는 연극을 기초로 만들어진 작품이었다고 하는데,
그런가.. 하고 생각해보니 정말 기억에 남는 조연이 없다.

사실상 anna와 larry, dan과 alice 외에는 등장하는 사람이 없다고도 할 수 있는 것.

(간혹 행인이라던가, 얼굴이 화면에 나오지 않는 채로 대사가 있는 배우들도 있긴 있지만..
비중이 있다고 보기는 힘들지 않을까)

이 영화에서 카메라는 꾸준히 배우들의 얼굴과 행동만을 따라간다.
예술적 의미를 지니다 못해 러닝타임 내내 그 감독의 예술적 시각을 강요하는,
일부 영화들에 빠지지 않는 무의미한 카메라 앵글이 거의 없다.

간혹 영화에 등장하는 일부 소품에 클로즈 업이 있지만..
단지 굉장히 중요한 의미가 있는 경우(anna의 카메라, alice의 여권 등)로 한정되고

영화는 뉴욕타임즈 영화평론가 a.o. scott이
'free-floating representatives of the disconnected contemporary tribe of wandering city-dwellers'
라고 표현한 네 명의 배우들과,

끊임없이 그들이 던지는 사랑에 관한 견해들,
때론 아름답지만 잔인할 정도로 솔직하고beautiful but brutally frank,
때론 불편할 정도로 직설적인uncomfortably direct 생각들로 가득찬다.

Dan: At six, we stand round the computer and read the next day's page, make final changes, put in a few euphemisms to amuse ourselves...
Alice: Such as?
Dan: "He was a convivial fellow" - meaning he was an alcoholic. "He valued his privacy" - gay. "He enjoyed his privacy" - raging queen.
Alice: What would my euphemism be?
Dan: She was... disarming.
Alice: That's not a euphemism.
Dan: Yes, it is.

Dan: I'm sorry.
Alice: Irrelevant.
Alice: What are you sorry for?
Dan: Everything.
Alice: Why didn't you tell me before?
Dan: Cowardice.
Alice: Is it because she's successful?
Dan: No, it's because she doesn't need me.
Alice: Did you bring her here?
Dan: Yes.
Alice: Didn't she get married?
Dan: She stopped seeing me.
Alice: Is that when we went to the country? To celebrate our third anniversary?
Alice: Did you phone her? Beg her to come back? When you went for your long, lonely walks?
Dan: Yes.
Alice: You're a piece of shit.
Dan: Deception is brutal. I'm not pretending otherwise.
Alice: How? How does it work? How do you do this to someone?
Dan: (shrugs)
Alice: Not good enough.
Dan: I fell in love with her, Alice.
Alice: As if you had no choice? There's a moment. There's always a moment.
“I can do this, I can give in to this, or I can resist it.”
And I don't know when your moment was, but I bet you there was one.
I'm going.
Dan: It's not safe out there.
Alice: And it's safe in here?
Dan: What about your things?
Alice: I don't need things.
Dan: Where will you go?
Alice: Disappear.

Alice: Can I still see you? Dan, can I still see you? Answer me.
Dan: I can't see you. If I see you, I'll never leave you.
Alice: What will you do if I find someone else?
Dan: Be jealous.
Alice: You still fancy me?
Dan: Of course.
Alice: You're lying. I've been you.

Alice: Will you hold me?
Alice: I amuse you, but I bore you.
Dan: No.
Alice: You did love me?
Dan: I'll always love you. I hate hurting you.
Alice: Then why are you?
Dan: 'Cause I'm selfish. And I think I'll be happier with her.
Alice: You won't. You'll miss me. No one will ever love you as much as I do.

Alice: Why isn't love enough?
I'm the one who leaves. I'm supposed to leave you. I'm the one who leaves.

Alice: Make some tea, buster.

Larry: I want you to tell me your name. Please. [throws down a note]
Alice: Thank you. My name is Jane.
Larry: Your real name. [throws down another note]
Alice: Thank you. My real name is Jane.
Larry: Careful. [throws down another note]
Alice: Thank you. Still Jane.
Larry: I've about got another 500 quid here. Why don't I just give you all this money, and you tell me what your real name is, Alice. [throws down the rest of his money]
Alice: I promise. [picks up some of the money]
Alice: Thank you. My real name... is plain... Jane Jones.
